Cause and Effect

A working-out, by Heidi Llewellyn

God created cause and effect as a law, and he put it into effect in the Universe.  For some actions the effect is evil.  Cause and effect doesn't stop after only two happenings.  For instance, one man pushes another (cause), and the other man falls down (effect).  But when the other falls down it is also a cause.  The floor trembling would be an effect and also a cause.  For every cause there are an infinite number of effects possible, and many more than one always take place.  God, being sovereign sees every cause and it's effects.  He sees the entire intermingling of them- the spider web.  Now, for God to act in our lives (cause) there will be endless effects, some good, some bad.  He weighs the cost.  God could stop a boy from dying, but he sees the cause of that dying, all the effects into eternity, and he may or may not decide to let the child live.  Our prayers, too, are causes with various effects.  God hears, he acts, and we reap the effects.  This explains God's existence.  Every cause is the effect of something else, but that can't go back forever.  Something must be that is not the effect of anything else.  An uncaused cause.  God.  In God's creating free will beings, he had to make the law of cause and effect for nature and persons, etc. Even the angels are governed by it.  It applies even to God, but God works all things together for good for those who love God.  His acts cause effects that eventually cause good.
