HOW DO I KNOW ?
by Bruce Heinly

If I believe I’m headed the right way today
But the way that I’m headed is wrong
I’m believing a lie . . . but how do I know?

If I believe all the words that I speak are the truth
But that which I speak is all wrong
I’m believing a lie . . . but how do I know?

If I believe that my life is all it can be
But there’s life beyond all that I see
I’m believing a lie . . . but how do I know?

If only the way had a voice and could speak
It could tell me which way I should go
But how do I know . . . if the way cannot speak?

If only the truth had a voice I could hear
It could give me the words I should say
But how do I know . . . if the truth I can’t hear?

If only my life had command of my thoughts
It could tell me just how I should live
But how do I know . . . if life has no words?

Perhaps if the words became flesh and could speak then the way I should go could be known
Then I would know . . . if the words came to life!

Perhaps if the truth could speak to my soul
So the words would be more than my own
Then I would know . . . if the truth had a voice!

Perhaps if I walked in this Spirit of truth
I would know I have found a good life
Then I would know . . . if life could just speak!

Now, suppose that all this has already been done
And the path set before me is lit
Then I would know . . . because then I could see!

And suppose, in that light, a voice speaks to my soul with the truth of what I should say
Then I would know . . . because then I could hear!

And suppose that this light is the life that I seek
And is given to all who believe
Then I would know . . . because then I’d believe!

Now, the stories are true and the plan is complete
All because of a death on a cross
How do I know? . . . Because now I can see!

Now, his name is Jesus, the Messiah, our God
And his mission – restoring the lost
How do I know? . . . Because now I can hear!

Now, he suffered and died, was for us crucified
And forgave us for all of our sins
How do I know? . . . Because now I believe!

“I am the way, and the truth, and the life”
Are the words of our lord, Jesus Christ
And because he has risen, his words still apply
And he’s offering all a new life!

So, the way has a voice, and the truth we can hear
And the life is a light that shines clear
How do I know? . . . Because he say’s so!
Whenever I pray, He is near!
